Certifications and Licenses

Why We’re Different

Crown Chimney Business License and Technician Certifications

Mechanical Business License:  Crown Chimney is a Mechanical Business Entity recognized by the State of NH. Through our MBE, Crown Chimney is a legally recognized business approved to work on gas appliances of any type.

The State of NH does not offer Home Improvement Contractor or Chimney Technician licenses leaving chimney technicians to seek out certifications to expand their education and professional growth. Certifications are test-based and awarded to individuals who have the knowledge to earn a passing grade.

Chimney Safety Institute of America (CSIA) Certified:  The CSIA education track is largely based on NFPA 211 Standard for Chimneys, Fireplaces, Vents and Solid Fuel Appliances as well as the International Residential Codes (IRC). Certifications are earned by professionals who have committed to continuing education and practical knowledge in the chimney and venting industry.

  • A Master designation is earned by someone who has been an active CSIA Certified Chimney Sweep®  for at least nine continuous years or a minimum total of 18 years (non-continuous) with at least one CEU renewal, has successfully completed at least six CSIA continuing education classes (online and in-person), and holds an active NFI Certification obtained through either the CSIA/NFI Wood, Gas, or Pellet Review and Training class. This requirement may be substituted by an active NFI certification held for a minimum of six years, a current F.I.R.E. Certified Inspector Credential, or an Associate level (or higher) degree in Fire Science from and accredited college.
  • A Specialist designation is earned by someone who has been CSIA Certified for at least three years and successfully completed at least four CSIA continuing education classes.

NFI Certified:  National Fireplace Institute is the educational division of the Hearth, Patio and Barbeque Association. Technicians are encouraged to earn certifications in three separate offerings:  wood appliances, pellet appliances and gas appliances. NFPA 211 fire codes and inspections are tested but fundamentally the courses focus on proper installation and servicing techniques.

NH Gas License:  The NH Gas Fitter’s Law HB1711 (known as “Amilia’s Law”) went into effect on January 1, 2007. Per this legislation, anyone who installs, services, or hooks up a gas appliance of any type must be licensed to perform work to the NFPA 54 National Gas Fuel Code. The State Fire Marshall’s office enforces license requirements.
